Hi philv,

Re: Listening to US officials downplaying this incidence convinces me more and more we live in a crazy world.

But consistent. I heard a distinct echo of the British response to BSE in USDA Sec'y A Veneman's remarks at her press conference today. When Dr. Murano got in front of the camera and said that the brain, spine and other neural tissues of the animal in question went to rendering and the rest of the downer cow into the meat supply, my chin dropped. How in the world is this possible after the catastrophic losses to the British and Canadian beef industries based on the greed of the industry? It's almost unbelievable how obtuse and cavalier the industry is w/r/t the public's (albeit irrational) concern about "mad cow" disease. There is no doubt but this whole crisis could have easily been averted by a sensible regulatory regime that recognized that downer cows are a special problem and need to be completely isolated from the food chain. Instead of giving up a few $10's of millions in profits per annum, the industry has just shot itself in the head and now will lose billions. Brilliant!
