I was on a fast attack which is still considered small. It was a palace compared to the WWII diesel boats. I ran the O2 generator and CO2 scrubbers and burners. We could stay down for ever with smokers and have good air. The diesels would spread absorbent to scrub the CO2 and I believe had some O2 candles but it's a wonder those guys survived really. Batteries giving off Hydrogen, diesel fuel stinking up the place. Yuuck!

That is why the submarine force always had great food. They tried to make up for the other short comings by giving us the best when it came to eats. And I imagine it's much easier making a good sit down meal for 119 then it would be for 5K on a carrier:)
