The average American has a larger debt burden(including
home equity and mortgage debt as well as consumer debt)
than he did a year ago. That is one way in which we
have "lost ground".

Wrong, Mark. The "debt burden" (financial obligations as a
percentage of disposable income) of the "average American"
has fallen over the last year. In fact, for the "average
American" and the average American homeowner it is lower
than it was when Bush took office. The changes are small
and counting only "borrowed money" and not other financial
obligations, it has risen insignificantly, but one can't
reasonably conclude that the "average American" has "lost
ground" over the last year on this basis.

than the debt service ratio. The FOR includes automobile
lease payments, rental payments on tenant-occupied
property, homeowners' insurance, and property tax payments.
