Pipes gives it a try He's puzzled too, along the same lines as I am. But if it's defeatist the Pals should be triumphant and they're not. They don't usually miss a chance to gloat. I was thinking about it, and the best analogy I could come up with that if one boxer steps back from another, it changes the dynamic - but the message is very different if it's in the first round, where the signal is 'scared', than if it's in the 17th round of a real slugfest, where the signal may be harder to distinguish - 'exhausted'? or 'trying a different strategy'?
