"The labor is imported"
It is?

If I access al Jazeera's website, am I importing labor from Qatar?
english.aljazeera.net

Suppose I download code developed there?

How about if I call my health insurance company's 1-800 number to get a question about benefits answered and end up talking to someone in India who claims to be in Atlanta?

When, during the Cold War, East Germans tuned to Voice of America, were they importing US product? How about Cubans now listening to US broadcasts from Miami?

But let's suppose you get your tariff. Tariffs these days are generally low, say 10%. So I hire a programmer in India for $10,000 a year- -not bad at all there, but about 10% of US wages. He works a year on a program. Then the 10% tariff is applied. $11,000. Still pretty cheap compared to the $100K+ the US would cost. Which product will you buy at Wal-Mart? The $30 doll that talks with the $11 made-in-India chip or the $120 US doll that is no better?

Or do you think the US should wall itself off from the rest of the world? HINT: Think "Soviet Union".

Or maybe the economy could be allowed to continue to adapt to pressures it encounters and whiners like you and Dizzy can be ignored.

Let me remind you of something: In the '80s, the Japanese were going to overrun the US and own the world. Where are they now?

Maybe this IS rocket science. That's what I do. The US still produces the best space satellites- -using lots of foreign chips.
