In the second half of 2003, the damage from equipment thefts in AO MOSENERGO's franchise area exceeded 1 mn rubles

18.12.2003

According to AO MOSENERGO's Department of Corporate Security (DCS), in the second half of 2003, there were 46 cases of theft of non-ferrous metals from the Company's facilities. Around 26.5 km of aluminium and copper cables were stolen from electric lines. Given the cost of repairs, the total damage exceeded 1 mn rubles. Based on these thefts, law enforcement departments in the Moscow region have initiated 35 criminal investigations.

On a year-to-year basis these figures are noticeably lower. In the second half of 2002, the length of stolen cables exceeded 23 km. The total damage amounted to approximately 4 mn rubles. In total there were 99 cases involving the theft of electrical equipment. Law enforcement departments in the Moscow region have initiated 76 criminal investigations.

AO MOSENERGO's DCS continuously works to reduce losses resulting from thefts from power facilities. Jointly with law enforcement officials, DCS arranges the detection of illegal shops at which non-ferrous metals are sold. DCS also coordinates raids at locations of repeated thefts and takes part in investigations. In addition, DCS educates the population aiming to prevent thefts.

The theft of electrical equipment (primarily, electric cables) disrupts the power supply and deprives the population of elementary boons of civilization. During the last six months, the thefts affected 43 population centers near Moscow that are populated by more than five thousand people.
