The big story in the stock market for 2003 was the return of the downtrodden. In the Editor's Portfolio, two such stocks that surged in 2003 were Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) and Motorola (NYSE: MOT). Lucent was up more than 132% at the time of this writing, while Motorola had soared more than 55%. Carlson's feeling is that substantial earnings improvement for telecom-related stocks may take a bit longer than Wall Street believes. However, the good news is that the worst is over for both companies, which spells good news for long-term price recoveries.
