Peter, just familiarize yourself with the knob that allows you to select the type of subject matter--sports, portraits, landscapes, etc. The camera software will do the rest. Hint, to avoid blur from camera movement, you may find the sports setting the most useful.

When printing from your computer, you can easily use the Canon software, especially if you have a recent model Canon printer. But you may prefer the control and customizing you can get if you use Adobe Photoshop or Elements, or similar software. After your first 200 shots, the camera will have paid for itself, compared with film.
