Your saying that crystallized an idea that's been percolating in my mind. The Supreme Court is evolving into our House of Lords. The next step in that process would be for them to start appointing their own successors - the political system has failed, it is in the national interest for the Court to be fully staffed, bla bla bla. I wonder if Ruth has a daughter. It'd be even more appropriate to what they are becoming if they make succession hereditary.

So this is what we will become if we follow the current trajectory ( which never happens ). We will have an upper house - SCOTUS, a lower house - congress, and an imperial President. The Constitution will be a theoretical remnant whose authority will be invoked to cover whatever actions the three work out amongst themselves.

They will take office by swearing an oath of loyalty to themselves - "so help me me".
