It is one of the ironies of history that Churchill supported Zionism because he thought that Jews, in those countries that wouldn't let them take part in national politics, like Russia, would become either Bolsheviks or Zionists, and he much, much preferred that they become Zionists. Churchill was not free from the prevailing illusion that Jews represented a very powerful political alliance, and thus he helped the Zionists actually become powerful enough to realize their dream, which they had not been before.
