Just recently I was reading articles about how beef prices were rising due to the number of people on the Fatkins diet eating more meat than they used to. If 10% of beef was exported and 90% of that market just died, that's a 10% (9%/90%) increase in domestic supply. Did Fatkins cause more or less than a 10% increase in beef consumption? In other words, after the initial shock to the system, will this really hurt the cattle industry or only take away the Fatkins-caused price increase?

I'm guessing that the Bush administration will downplay the health threat, so that domestic consumption won't drop by much. It may even increase due to the price drop and the diet-induced increase in demand.

I would guess that any meat-related stocks that get hammered by this news would enjoy a dead-cow bounce in the next few months.
