Russia building power plants in Iraq

Interfax Information Services, B.V. (December 23, 2003)

Russia's Tekhnopromexport, a world leader in the construction of power plants, is continuing to build the Yusifia, Harta and Al-Shemal power plants in Iraq, despite the continuing unrest in the country, company representative Sergei Molozhavy told journalists.

"At the moment over 200 Russian specialists are working in Iraq and we plan to strengthen our position on this market," he said. "The Russian builders have not yet encountered any problems with the Americans, whose military units are located in the country. The builders of the power plants are currently being guarded by Iraqi police," he added.

The Yusifia thermal power plant has eight power-producing units of 210 megawatts each. Previously it was planned to launch the first unit in 2005." However, given the force majeur circumstances in Iraq, the launch of the first unit will more than likely be put back a little," Molozhavy said.

The Harta plant has two power-producing units with a capacity of 200 megawatts each and the Al-Shemal plant, at which installation work is currently underway, will have four blocks of 350 megawatts each.

Molozhavy said that during the war in Iraq, the company had to evacuate its specialists, causing losses of several million dollars.

Tekhnopromexport has already built the Najibia and Nasiria power plants in Iraq, launched in 1975 and 1982 respectively.

Tekhnopromexport is currently building 15 power-producing units around the world.
