It's the classic double standard problem. Problems coming from outside are scrutinized closely; those internal as "not so bad." It is a product of "organizational ethics." People who look to an imperfect organization to guide their ethics, instead of people having their own inegrity and ethics and applying that to the job ... sometimes I wonder if this isn't what the extremes of socialism always produce.

Don't take offense, mish, but read again the way you have framed the problem. The problem as you framed it is: I cannot discern whether this is a HUGE or a MINOR problem, thanks to the government. Implication is that: If government were just honest you would KNOW how bad the problem is ...

Just pointing out what you expect of government is rather a tall order. Given the alternative of choosing whether to be free or safe -- I'd almost always rather choose to be free. Don't get me wrong -- I'm glad that we have public health agencies and even, agenices that look into food quality, but we shouldn't be surprised if their motives aren't always "truth and justice."

Of course, ultimately, as a comsumer -- you must judge the risk for yourself -- is it something you want to eat? Vote with your pocketbook -- there may be some who raise beef that are willing to certify no nervous tissue in the feed -- that is also another way you my vote as a consumer ...
