Germany was THE power but destroyed itself through the use of its industrial power in wars of conquest. The US was larger -- as Bilow has pointed out. But larger is not better. The US emerged as dominant during the war, a time when great strides were made in the US to win the war. By comparison, China is now larger than the US in population and growing rapidly, but it will be some time indeed before China surpasses the United States in scientific, industrial and military capability -- something we do not like to think about and something that has not in any way been factored into our foreign policy.
