Some time ago, or did you not notice the Reagan administration?

I guess I'm a little slow in recognizing the trend. The curve was slower then, more subtle, and I attributed it to normal fluctuation. This hockey stick of a chart we have now is hard for even the slow (or reluctant) to ignore. <g>

Anyway, I predate the Reagan administration by some years, having come of age with Goldwater, so "it used to be" may be different for me than for you.
