TOKYO -- Orders for Japanese semiconductor making equipment nearly tripled in November from a year earlier, according to a Reuters report that cited the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ).

The report said sales jumped 171.4 percent in November from a year earlier and that the book-to-bill ratio was 1.44, indicating new orders outpaced shipments for the seventh straight month.

Orders totaled 151.14 billion yen (about $1.41 billion), a level not seen since December 2000.

"Capital expenditure in chips is expanding in Japan, keeping pace with output growth in digital products," the report quoted an un-named SEAJ spokesman as saying
