Jewel, I think that depends on the religion. My childhood religion taught me that we had a duty to share our last crumb with the less fortunate and that a rich man's chances of getting into heaven were slim to none. Poverty was considered holy, intentional poverty, that is, and poverty by happenstance was blessed. There was never any emphasis on self reliance, only charity. I grew up with the understanding that capitalism was sinful and that socialism was the way of God.
