I only use Microsoft Internet Explorer on the few occasions when I visit a Microsoft site and they make you use it, since many of their sites don't work well with other browsers. Otherwise, I use Mozilla. It's an excellent browser, and you have complete flexibility on blocking popups. As I recall, from using AOL in the past, if you log on with AOL, then open another browser, you can browse the internet OK. Just an idea.
