Japan's booming pop culture
Animated cartoons, movies become big Japan business

TOKYO (CBS.MW) -- Meghan Barber is like any American college student. She hangs out with her friends and does what most people her age do -- except for her fixation with Japanese animation or "anime."

It was an accidental viewing of the animated cartoon Sailor Moon when she was a high school student that changed her life. Sailor Moon -- featuring schoolgirls with magical powers who fight to save the world from evil monsters -- captured her heart.

She now dresses up like her favorite characters, collects anime goods and even goes to an annual convention to meet the creators.

"As for my own personal collection, the number of pieces is beyond counting," she said. "My collection fills six shelves, two extremely stuffed animal hammocks. I have numerous small items nailed up on the walls, four scrolls, 10 posters and several plushies on the floor. I also have volume 1 to 18 of Sailor Moon manga (comic books)."
