for some reason my installation of IE 6 says "custom" even though I never select "custom" during the multiple times that I reinstalled IE 6.

I've seen this happen when you run utilities such as Cookie Pal. For example, if you exit Cookie Pal and reset the security back to "default", the change only stays put until you run Cookie Pal again.

As for why your browser is crashing, the more clues the better. For example, aside from the particular circumstance you cited on SI, have you seen this problem at any other time? My quick guess would be that it has something to do with Java because of the GSP scripting command in the URL. Check Tools | Internet Options | [Advanced Tab] under "Microsoft VM" to see if the "JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled" is checked.
