I have an excellent time line somewhere in my bookmarks that has a fairly complete list of who did what, and it's not pretty. The US is not a humanitarian country- it is a very selfish and vicious country, like most countries. IT is willing to do just about anything to further it's quest for natural resources and finished products at a cheap cost, whether that involves propping up dictators or exploiting children in child labor, or buying products political prisoners have made.

That does not mean there are not some people (like me, for example) who are true humanitarians, and who are against these activities on principle, and who are against them EVERYWHERE, not just where there is oil. But there aren't that mean real humanitarians, there are a lot of faux humanitarians who think they can wrap themselves in a do-gooder mantle, while they are actually merely furthering the economic and geo-political ends of the US. Some of those people are honestly self-deluded. I can only pity them.
