No doubt that the republicans will try to spin the Gadhafi flip into a vindication of pre-emptive war and the "Bush Doctrine".

But it is likely that these same results could have been obtained without pre-emptive war, provided that continued pressure on Iraq was pursued.

Libya's GDP is about $40 billion. We've already spent three times that amount on the war in Iraq. Much of that going to massive infrastructure improvements. I think that Gadhafi simply did the math, and realized that this was an opportune moment to roll over, and then get his country aligned for some of the "Terror Welfare" money.

Gadhafis weapons programs were in the very early stages. They may have never produced a single weapon. But the value of these weapons programs may prove to be very significant to Gadhafi, and to Bush. Look for Gadhafi to milk any concessions he can from us.

This is the same gambit being played against us by N. Korea. In exchange for eliminating weapons, we would then provide security and economic aid.

Gadhafi saw the opportunity, and he wanted to get in line first. I'd say it's very smart on his part. He will likely be able to get what he wants from Bush in the process, as Bush has much to gain by Gadhafi's cooperation, politically.

So basically Libya, a country of no real threat, will parlay their "capitulation" into free pass to the American teat. And Bush will try to parlay Libya's capitulation into a PR coup for the Bush Doctrine.
