I haven't read that, but what I have read hasn't been particularly specific on numbers. Just the opposite in fact. I don't doubt that anyone pulling a coup will need the army; but Mushareff's deal to step down from the leading the army in a year is disconcerting, as are the assassination attempts. If there are many midlevel officers there who dislike the US enough or sympathize with our enemies, it will not be a good thing.

I still think Pakistan/Afghanistan is the real "front" in the "war on terror;" Iraq is an unfortunate sideshow.
