China's booming auto market will drive worldwide automotive sales to record levels in 2004.

Car sales in China, which grew 65% this year to 1.9 million vehicles, are expected to grow by nearly one-third to 2.5 million vehicles in 2004 due to rising urban incomes, new models and the country's admittance to the World Trade Organization, according to an industry forecast by Scotiabank's research arm.

"China is really the key driver of the global auto industry at the moment," said Carlos Gomes, a Scotiabank senior economist. "It will really drive sales to record highs in 2004 -- not only in China but on a worldwide basis."
