In time of war nerves get frayed. Those of us who see the world pretty much the same need to tolerate differences between us. If i got hot i apologize too. Now for part 2 which is a rant but one with some truth to it.
I was watching the idiots in Times Square last night. I was wondering what was going thru their heads besides the alcohol. And then i thought of my use of the word charming in our little debate yesterday.
Unclewest, this is why we fight. The mass of people in this country don't have to understand the threat, be prepared for doom, vote monolithically for bush or not be liberals.
In order for us to be victorious in this war they have to be their charming, funloving, no fear, naive selves.
Sure we might suffer harm because of this devil may care attitude or the inablility to recognize the enemy. But without those folks partying in the face of threats, defending the constitutional rights of a guy like Padilla etc etc, this would cease to be the USA, wouldn't it?
Those who are soldiers have to take this into account before they enlist. They may be slogging in iraq to make safe the folks who are getting drunk in NYC. And they do it without a question, perhaps because they long for the day when they can do that again in a world without terror.
When i walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, i walked arm in arm with some folks who probably were protesting the afgan attack much less iraq. I am not a pacifist but if everyone in the world was, there would be no war. So how angry can i get at the naive young who run with dean and think they can make the world a better place by themselves? I admit i get angry at them but for me its like looking in the mirror because i recognize some of me in them. Happy New Year. Personally, i might go to Times Square next year if i werent so friggin old. Maybe i could hang with dick clark? Mike
