TH,

I've heard good things about WinXP myself, but I'm a slow migrator. I also don't like the 'call-MS' thing when you upgrade your machine to get the OS to let you in.

I would say Win2K is probably more stable than Win98. Hard for me to say, since the way I use my machine has changed so much over the years (not to mention brain-cell attrition <g>). Some things I notice about win2K every day:

Much slower than win98 to save a large file. One xls/vba file I work with is a mere 600KB and takes about 5 seconds to save, whereas on win98 it would save in under a second. Not sure if this is a function of the OS or the file system since I've only used win2K with NTFS.

Much, much slower than win98 to shut down. win2K takes almost as long to shut down as it does to boot, whereas win98 just blinks off.

Win2K will not install without the disk being 'very fresh'. I have always had to run the low-level format over at least part of the disk to get the installation program to work, meaning you cannot preserve any partitions. win98 would install after simply formatting the active partition.

Intuitively, I'd say these are parts of the price you pay for greater stability and reliability. Sounds, from your experience, that MS has tried to get past the restriction of needing a clean disk prior to an xp install, but they aren't completely there yet.
