As a young'un, I learned that simple hydrocarbons (CH4, NH3 etc) when placed in a gas discharge tube, would (upon repeated electrical discharges) coat the inside of the tube with amino acids - life's building blocks. Later as a youth following the then new science of Radio Astronomy, I learned that interstellar gas clouds were filled with these simple compounds (and many more complex ones like formaldehyde). So the gas clouds out of which stars, planets and comets were made, were filled with the ingredients for life.

A far too humbling perspective, for those that need to "pump up" the significance of this planet in their small minds.
