Nadine,
Perhaps the US is pressuring egypt and others(jordan, saudi arabia) to do the right thing and if they do, perhaps we can bring sharon to the table. The more i think about it, the more i am convinced that a palestinian rump state can never be the answer because it can never be successful. I have suggested the jordanians and egyptians take it back to a true 1967 solution. I know you dont think they have the political will to do so. But the threat of terror to these moderate regimes is so great, this may be the part of the fight that becomes theirs. Turn the west bankers attention to the east and to the south. Hell make them a UN mandate under jordan/egypt/saudi control until a final determination. Have sharon divert the wall to 1967/campdavid/tava borders. Create a free trade zone that includes these countries, Israel, SA, iraq and potentially syria. Put the saudis in charge of religious places. Create a religious counsel in jerusalem that includes jews, muslims, christians and orthodox christians to guarantee all holy sights.
The mideast needs bold thinking that combines a desire for democracy, freedom etc with reform of existing regimes. mike
