<All killing is evil, and yet . . . . what do you call a man who sees a child being hacked to death with a machete, and turns his back and walks away? Is he not evil, too?>
Yes, he is evil. To do nothing, in the face of evil, is to condone evil.
The difference between us, is that you equate pacifism with "doing nothing". And every "doing" that you advocate, ends up being some form of killing. You see force as the only way to achieve anything in the world. Hobbes and Darwin are your gods. You see the world the way a chimpanzee does, as a dominance hierarchy maintained by violence and the threat of violence. Every person, every nation, for you, can only exert control over their environment by hitting the other chimps. If any of your fellow chimps (like me) refuses to hit, you conclude he is a weakling, a coward, not alpha-male material.
Doing by killing is the road to more killing. Doing without killing is the road to peace.
You know this, but you can't rise above your chimp heritage, so you pretend that killing is the way to peace. This rationalization, this self-deciet, has become pervasive, in the Age of Lies. |
