If TC's suggestion of trying to boot in safe mode doesn't work, perhaps you could try booting in DOS and run a complete chkdsk with the fix or repair parameter. When I used WIN 98 in the past, doing the above bailed me out of some heart-stopping episodes. If you can get into safe mode (as per TC) you can run scandisk (with fix errors). Still think you're better off running chksdsk from DOS. Good luck.
