RE: CORBA

Don't write CORBA off so quickly. Remember, it's probably 2 years or more ahead of DCOM, and working feverously to extend the lead. I'm a software engineer for an ERP/MRP software vendor. we see "compelling imperatives" for an infrastructure to support distributed/cooperative systems. Everywhere we look, we see requirements for CORBA compliance.

In our marketplace at least, DCOM is not or the radar chart as a competitor to CORBA right now. And from what I have have studied of both DCOM and CORBA, the 2 are not mutually exclusive. I have seen architectures in which they co-exist.

Near term, JAva IDL bindings will be added. Java offers a GREAT DEAL to CORBA in terms of functionality. ALso, there is an OMG RFP for Messaging Services. MOM functionality (such as IBM's MQSeries) will be supported in the next CORBA release. Numerous other RFP's are out there as well.

The big hurdle for CORBA is to enhance server-side scalability. It appears that the likely direction is to layer a TP monitor piece on top of CORBA.

So, what you see in CORBA today is as different from what it will be in a year as today's CORBA is from last year's.

In other words, don't try to hit a moving target. IMHO, Novell should take CORBA very seriously.
