IIRC it was during the Iran-Iraq war, when US warships were escorting oil tankers because Iran and Iraq were taking pot shots at each other's oil traffic. The Iranian jet probably didn't respond to calls to identify itself, and the US ship shot it down. I believe the Iranians were pilgrims to the Hajj, which would explain their white garb. Derek
