I have wanted to be a conservative for the last forty years, but I never saw anyone who called himself or herself a conservative whom I could stand to vote for. I do wish I had voted for Goldwater. No, I take that back. My parents voted for Thurmond in 1948. If they were alive they would probably say "He shouldn't have done that, but he had the right ideas about a lot of things."
