If you are on a tight budget, you get the most bang for your buck with memory, no question. It's cheap and way more impt than processor speed. A few seconds here and there, unless you are a full time gamer, will not be noticeable with processor speed. Most new machines give you 2.0 on the cheapest ones and that's plenty fast. Same with notebooks. As for pro v home, the difference in cost is about 60-100 so really a question of price. Pro doesn't do all that much more but there is a pretty good comparison on the microsoft page. Mostly in networking and security, but you probably won't use much of it. I think most of us get whatever comes with the package we buy. I have both and think my Pro has been a bit more stable but I couldn't say for sure. As for 64 bit tech, sounds like you are a few years away from really having to make that decision. You might want to think about a notebook. The spread between prices has narrowed. You can still get more for your money with a desktop if you have a good monitor. But if you are buying a cheap notebook OR a new desktop and monitor, it will be pretty close. I'd go with the notebook if you are the type to carry it around, even room to room (but get a built in wifi). Good luck and best wishes
