We don't have a direct democracy. We elect representatives. If we don't like them, we vote them out. Short of that we can write them letters, affiliate with a lobbying group, get some publicity for our concerns, find someone who has leverage to influence them, make a huge donation, etc.

You can't expect any elected official to do what you'd like every time or even most of the time. Sometimes they do what the other folks who voted for them like. Mostly they do what the big contributors like, what their party expects, and what they damned well please. <g>

I'd like to say you only get the representation you like all the time if you're the one elected, but even the elected officials have their chains pulled.
