I found this info on the rare earth site. To me it sounds somewhat like some of the work that Energy Conversion Devices is already working on. I would like feedback from anyone out there who knows this subject better though.

Sanyo has developed new negative electrode materials which can raise the discharge capacity and energy density of Ni-MN
battery. The number of hydrogen atoms stored in the new materials is 25% more than that in the original materials. But for real
Ni-MH battery, it is not more than 25% owing to the same positive electrode materials used.

These materials can be used in mobiles working at lower temperatures. Moreover, it is can be used in motor-driven tools and
fuel-electric vehicles which need high output power.

The new material with the formula AB5 contain magnesium atoms and a small number of atoms of Co, so the cost dropped by
a big margin.

The square battery using the new materials will go to the market in the spring of 2004.
