Well, you are right to certain point to software running on PC. But temp dir is made use of in almost every application. In that situation, any application will be better off using temp dir in RAM.

Lots of people, including me surf on net and we download lots of graphics. When all this temp files can be stored in RAM, performance will boost.

Most of users/people will benefit using temp dir in RAM drive including notebook. I know, you do special SW development but I still think it will help you. RAM is cheap, 250MB RAM as temp drive improve performance.

I will buy new system based on 1GB RAM with 250MB temp drive in RAM, it may increase cost a bit but performance will boost significantly.
