I submit that the problem was not so much with the jump as with the headline.

Now that I have a "Brand Name" with the site that published the article, I am going to take it a little further. As you know, the reporter has nothing to do with the Headline. That is usually done by the Editor. I suspect that the reporters story was written in a different order and then reshuffled by the Editor, who added the Headline and Lead. I am going to try to get to the reporter and find out if I am right.

I cannot overstate the importance of getting the main story before the "Jump." Most readers just don't go inside, and take the lead for the whole story. That is why Journalism Profs make a big deal out of getting the facts up front. The editors all know this, and can really manipulate an article and still claim, "hey, it's all there." Very common in the Business. I am sure the Editor, who does not like NAFTA, did this. We shall see.
