We had SNOW here in Oregon. Lots of it on New Year's Day. We live way up on a hill, and the driveway is 400 feet long! Yikes. I'm from CA. I can drive through wind and rain and hail and dark of night. Not snow, though. We have well water, filtered. We had turkey for New Years, used the new turkey fryer. The only tasty part was the peanut oil flavored skin. Oh, don't eat tuna, either - mercury contamination.

As for your daughter and college - have her check out scholarships online, eg FastWeb and read Ben Kaplan's book on how to apply for them. Community colleges are great for the first two years. They have transfer programs to universities.

Here's another thought, why not ask your mom for help?

Well, looks as though the snow has melted - I can go out to get some tofu. :)
