The Muslim law allows upto 4 wives. But it also places an onus on men to provide for all the 4 wives. If they fail to do so then they are required to pay off the wives. In the West you have the courts divide property during a divorce. In the Muslim law, they have that property in the form of a dowry from the male placed in escrow. This "male dowry" concept is a burden placed on the men and it applies to every marriage including the first wife.

Bear in mind that the early Islam converts lead a bedouin life. Multiple wives, ownership of women by men, eye for an eye etc. was a common practice in these communities.

But many modern day Muslims do not have four wives, do not adhere to the "dowry" concept etc. However, they do retain the style of clothing such as the hijab etc.

Chuck, you said you live in a predominantly Arab area of the US. Do you get to know them and make friends with them?I also live in a predominantly Muslim area on the West coast and these are things I have come to learn from them.

Long live diversity. Long live the US.
