Finest minds perhaps, but their goal was to create a universal church, which was not Jesus's intention. What does it say when a John follower calls a Thomas follower a heretic, both are followers of Jesus's saying. In fact, if Thomas was Jesus's most beloved disciple, why is his gospel not included in the New Testament. I know why, because in that gospel, Jesus speaks out against organized religion.
