I don't know what it's comparable to. I don't think anyone does. But if you go by the numbers in England, a country where they eat brains (which is not typical in the US)- at the "height" of the scare, 2000, 28 people died.

\To compare Mad Cow to aids at this point is ridiculous. I don't think there is any evidence that Mad Cow would have had the same effect as AIDS, even if actions had not been taken. I guess we can be glad that there won't be 28 people dying of Mad Cow this year, but still, in terms of things that really threaten humans, this is WAY down there on the list.
