Honk If You Love Howard

Howard Dean's "public embrace of Jesus" ("What a Friend We Have in Jesus," Review & Outlook, Jan. 2) hasn't caused the fury that George W. Bush's campaign pronouncements of faith did because Mr. Dean's affirmation of faith appears insincere. It is as if Mr. Dean is winking to his angry-left base, "Hey guys, listen, I've got to go do this Jesus thing to appease the stars & bars crowd down South. Don't worry though, it's just part of the strategy."

The outrage over Mr. Bush's comments happened because it was believed (feared) he meant it. In Mr. Dean's case, people understand he is merely filling in his "How to Get Elected" checklist (photo ops in hardhats, shaking hands with minorities, reading to children). This may appease Mr. Dean's base, but it remains to be seen if it dupes the Bible Belt.
