My grandma's nickname was Tom. She grew up on a cotton farm in Alabama. All her brothers and sisters had nicknames. She later became a weaver in a cotton mill and I've worked in a cotton mill and am proud of it, but my first job was shining shoes in a barber shop. My mom married when she was 14 and had me when she was 16, but she graduated from college with a double major and there is nothing she can't do. My house is filled with her paintings. She is a an amazing woman and a genius and I am not using that word lightly.
