Lucent Technologies Announces US$11.1 Million Fiber Optic Cable Contract in India PR Newswire - August 13, 1997 12:41 LU %TLS %CON V%PRN P%PRN NEW DELHI, India, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies' (NYSE: LU) joint venture with Finolex has won a US$11.1 million (Rs.40 crore) order from Bharti Telenet to manufacture and supply the optical fiber cable for Bharti's basic telecommunications services project in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Located in central India, Madhya Pradesh is the nation's largest state. Bharti's project is scheduled for completion at the end of 1998. "We are pleased to have placed the order with Lucent and Finolex's joint venture because we're assured of the highest quality and the leading edge technology developed by Lucent's Bell Laboratories," said Sunil Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Enterprises. "We have also chosen to use armored cable since it provides a cost effective solution and enables faster installation for the speedy deployment of our basic services network." Under the terms of the contract, the joint venture between Lucent and Finolex will supply both armored cable -- cable with an external sheath for added protection -- and non-armored cable to Bharti. Both types of cable have a fiber count of 6,12,24. Bharti Telenet Ltd, a joint venture between Bharti Enterprises and Telecom Italia, is the licensed operator of basic services in Madhya Pradesh. "We are delighted with this opportunity to team up with Bharti Telenet, the leading private operator, to bring basic services to the general public and businesses in India," said Subrata Paul, managing director of the Lucent joint venture with Finolex. "Our manufacturing facility is well equipped to manufacture world-class fiber optic cables that meet Bharti Telenet's needs. We have one of the best fiber optic manufacturing facilities in the world and we are fully committed to delivering the highest quality cables to meet Bharti's requirements." The joint venture between Lucent and Finolex, located in Village Urse, Pune, has a state-of-the-art plant which began operations in January this year to manufacture and market international grade, dielectric and armored fiber optic cables to a fast growing Indian telecommunications market. A partnership between Lucent and Finolex, the joint venture was established as part of Lucent's efforts to supply local content for major projects in India. Fiber optic cables are used in the backbone/long haul transmission networks between cities, in local access/distribution networks, in connections between central office switches, and in LAN (local area network) and cable television applications. A "backbone" network is the part of the communications system that carries the heaviest traffic and joins local area networks together, either inside a building, across a city, or throughout a country. Lucent Technologies, a world leader in fiber optic technology, invented the laser in 1958 at Bell Laboratories and made optical fiber and cable for the first commercial installation in 1977. In 1988, Lucent made the fiber for the first Trans-Atlantic Fiber Optic Cable Systems. In 1994, the company introduced the True-Wave(R) Nonzero-Dispersion fiber, which has received four industry awards, including Laser Focus World's 1995 Commercial Achievement Award. Lucent Technologies (LU) designs, builds, and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, consumer and business telephone systems and microelectronics components. Bell Laboratories is the research and development arm of the company. For more information about Lucent Technologies, headquartered at Murray Hill, N.J., visit our website at lucent.com.
