But at some point, as long as the dollar continues to fall, increasing the relative value of their own currency, they will wake up some day and ask why are we holding dollars, anyway?

They are holding dollars because we keep sending them dollars in exchange for tangible goods and services. They then must do something with those dollars - buy US goods and services, invest in dollar-denominated assets or sell them to someone else who wants to do one of those things. Of course, if they don't want to receive any more dollars, they can stop selling us things.
