Let me put it more simply - this rule applies in most cultures. If you talk down to Bubba, he will tell you where to get off and he will listen to someone who treats him with respect instead of disdain (even if that person's "sincerity" is totally fake).

I have seen good, smart, mostly well-meaning centrist and liberal politicians make this mistake over and over and over. They are so smart and so right that they don't need to connect with that ignoramus fixing the street or driving the truck.

Most of them spent their political "careers" in the opposition if they were ever elected at all. And in the rare cases when they made it into power (Croatia the last few years for example) they often flounder. They don't know how to connect with the majority of their electorate.

A lot of not so dim people come from the American south. You may be talking to more of them here than you know. Piss on Bubba and you piss them off, believe me.
