Jon,

I'm still in CRT land and have 4 17 inch monitors along the return of my desk and like it very much.

I've never tried the 2 by 2 configuration, so cannot do a direct comparison, but I find it best to have monitors slightly below eye level for most comfort. Moving the head at the neck side to side is relatively painless. Looking up (even slightly) multiple times per minute would get old quickly, I believe.

I have the keyboard and mouse centered on Monitor 2 (from left) and it the monitor I do most activity on, mostly Web brousing, trade interfaces, etc.

Monitor 1 is for streaming news and communications, mostly e-mail, some IM interfaces and very occasionally, video conferences with fellow geeks. I also have a few level 2 windows on it when I'm watching something particularly close.

Monitor 3 is dedicated to 20 real time charts using 5 minute candlestick charts.

Monitor 4 is a 2 by 2 array of history charts and is the least used real estate, which is why it is furthest away by centering myself on monitor 2.

I intend to replace the CRT's when one fails with all LCD's. (They gotta match, right!) I'll continue with the 4 wide configuration. I would probably try a 2 by 2 configuration if I could lower it below standard desk height. That would keep the upper monitors at a reasonable altitude. (What is the service limit anyway?! ggg)
