The responsible parent, knowing the risk of v-CJD is effectively zero, replies to the three-year-old, "You want fries with your burger?" By contrast, from the time they could walk, they got a stern word (or two, or as many as necessary) from me, whenever they didn't walk right beside me in a parking lot (the most dangerous environment for any child).

With my 12-year-old, who is on the cusp of being a reasoning creature, I'd use her question to introduce her to the concept of risk-benefit analysis, and how to assess the reliability of data.
