Thanks, Dr. Snyder. I appreciate not having to deprive her of one of life's simple pleasures. It is also nice to know that an MD said it's OK.

I think there are two additional factors that make risk assessment particularly difficult in this situation. One is the magnitude of the potential harm, which in this particular instance appears to be lethal, multiplied by the unknowable but certainly very low probability of danger. The second is derived from agency theory and the "prudent man rule" that tends to dictate what is perhaps an excessive degree of caution when what we prescribe may affect the health (or in the usual situation, the wealth) of others. It's much easier to bear the consequences of my own risk-taking than to be in a position of making such decisions for others.
